This page showcases some of my quilts for which there are no patterns and, best of all, some of your work. 1. Cosmic Parade ©2000 50" x 67" by  Gail Garber

This quilt is the third in a series of star quilts, reflecting my new direction in quiltmaking. Everything is freeform and loose. There are few rules with my new technique. This quilt is a parade of colorful stars! The largest star in the lower right hand corner represents the light of a rising star. The fractured background fades to dark in three stages as each star in the parade is more distant from the light source. Colorful geese wander throughout the parade. Perhaps they are the clowns that entertain the masses between star events. This quilt features several different hand-painted Sky-Dyes fabrics by Mickey Lawler. They helped me achieve the colorful effect and motion in the rows of flying geese. The background is scrappy. Machine pieced and quilted.

2. "Galactic Migration", October 2003 by Holly Nelson

Dear Gail,

I took your "Goose is Loose" workshop in Houston last year and thoroughly enjoyed it.  You asked for pictures if we finished our projects, so my "Galactic Migration" is attached.  It's finished size is 26" by 29 1/2", as I limited myself to the work we started in the class -- and that was determined by the width of the freezer paper!

As if finishing this interesting quilt weren't enough, it won Second Place in the Art Quilt category at the Greater San Antonio Quilt Guild show earlier this month.  (The first place winner also won Best in Show!)

Thanks again for the inspiration and for a great class.  I look forward to your coming to our guild in February.

3. "Leonid Meteor"  by Karen Owsley

Dear Gail,

I was inspired to make this quilt after taking Gail's class sponsored by Palouse Patchers in the spring of 2002.  I love the sense of motion that the flying geese create.  I started the design on the quilt the night the Leonid Meteor Storm was supposed to take place and thought that would be a fitting title for the quilt.  Alas, it rained here that night and we didn't get to see the real thing.

The ring which the meteor goes through has no special significance.  When I saw the diagrams in Gail's book showing how to make the geese go behind a star, I wanted the geese to go through the circle and not behind it so I designed that into my quilt.

The whole quilt is pieced together and this is the first time I've designed my own pattern and pieced together curves this way.  I was amazed at how perfectly flat it turned out so I definitely have the courage to do that again!

Thanks much!
Karen Owsley

Dear Gail,

I enjoyed your Goose is Loose Workshop in Atlanta very much! My little quilt was finished within a week, but the photo took a while. Here is my finished piece. Thank you for coming to Atlanta to share and inspire!

Sincerely,
Leah Steiner

6. Abu Dhabi Quilt Guild, United Arab Emirates

Hi Gail,

Abu Dhabi is emptying of expats and families as the school year ends and the heat becomes unbearable. It's a time when indoor tasks get done like the guild photo album! Thought you might like to see some of the results of your workshops!! Three of the ladies actually finished quilts in time for the Annual Show! As we have just "gone digital" with cameras, I realised that I could send them to you at the press of a few buttons! so here goes....

1. Where's the Good Star? by Janine Ibbini
2. Springtime by Judith Osborne
3. Hairdance by Paulette McEneaney

It's homeward bound for me in 20 days - wet & windy weather, great! Spent a week in Seychelles in May - saw lots of S. bird specialities - especially on Cousin island, but also Praslin, La Digue and Mahe. Unfortunately, time didn't permit a visit to Bird Island, maybe next time.. .Magpie robin, S. warbler and fody, S. Paradise Flycatchers!etc.

Good Luck with your Tour of NZ,
Best Wishes,
Mary Moar

7. Carol Dunn, Spokane, WA

January 2003

Dear Gail,

When you were in Spokane of this year, I had the privilege of modeling one of your "Scrap Jackets" which I thought was really fabulous. It drew lots of raves from the audience. So, I bought your pattern and decided to make on for myself. I chose colors that I loved and which I think look good on me and had a lot of fun constructing it. When I modeled it for Washington State Quilter's audience later in the spring, it brought a lot of favorable comments along with requests to take my picture in the jacket. It was just an all-around fun project and I may even venture to try and entirely different color combination and construct another one of these days. Thanks for the inspiration and the good pattern which was concise and easy to follow.

Sincerely, Carol Dunn
