techniques.   During the afternoon, students will learn paper foundation piecing techniques as it relates to these designs

Classroom Needs:

This class will focus on design in the morning.  Therefore, students will not use sewing machines until the afternoon.

MARINER'S COMPASS MATERIALS LIST
6 Hour Class - Intermediate Level

 

The Mariner's compass pattern, and all circle patterns are remarkably easy to draft and stitch. This class will enable

you to draft and piece any size compass  in the future.  You will practice drafting in the morning.  Creating variations of

the standard compass will be explained, such as extended points.  Once you feel comfortable with the drafting, Gail

will provide ready-made  templates for a sixteen points 14" compass, which can be finished as a 16" block or a

*          20-24" wall-hanging.

COLOR IN QUILTING
3 Hour Class - All Levels

 

Is color choice difficult for  you?   In this 1/2 day class, we will explore simple color theory as it relates to quilting.  The

class will begin with a short lecture on what makes an effective quilt, combining design, color, texture, and value.  

Students will then work through a variety of exercises which will stretch the imagination.  No sewing involved.

There is a $7.00 kit fee for this class.  This must be paid at the time of the class.

THE GOOSE IS LOOSE
6 hour Class - Intermediate Level

 

In this interpretive, design oriented class, students will explore free-form flying geese which are easily stitched using
paper foundation piecing techniques. These are the techniques that I used to create the background and wild goose strips
in my recent quilts.  This class will focus on creating, drafting and stitching original designs. You will create a custom piece
of fabric which can form the base fabric for a unique jacket or a contemporary wall quilt.

*          1 yard contrasting background fabric (this will be used behind the geese)

*          1 yard assorted scraps for geese

*          Large paper for drafting (17" x 22")(this may be freezer paper)

HEXAGONAL STARS - A DESIGNER=S DELIGHT
6 Hour Class - All Levels
              

 

*          Pattern - $6.00 (must be paid at time of class)

*          Rotary cutting equipment

*          Sewing machine

*          Basic sewing supplies

*          Fabric and Paper Scissors

*          Colored pens or pencils

*          Neutral color thread

We will explore several different designs, all of which can be created using a single block.  Bring an

assortment of fabrics in addition to those listed below to allow  yourself more creative freedom.  This

project will be paper foundation pieced and the pattern includes the paper foundation piecing sheets.

*          1 yd. each of two different background fabrics

*          1/2 yd. dark print

*          2 yd. light/medium print

*          3/4 yd. medium

*          1 yd. dark

 

You will need the following later to finish your quilt:

*          Backing fabric - yardage will be determined by finished size of quilt top

*          Batting

*          1/2 yd. binding fabric (or more if your quilt is larger than a 36" hexagon

SENSATIONAL STARS
6 Hour Class - Intermediate Level

 

Understand the process of creating your own original design star quilt.  It=s simple and easy with a ruler and a compass, even for those of you who hate math. No pattern fee, but book purchase highly recommended. Books will be available for purchase in class.


 

You will practice drafting in the morning.  Developing original star designs will be explained.  Once you feel comfortable with the drafting, you will continue developing and stitching your own design.   You may also select one of the patterns from the book to stitch.  Paper Foundation piecing techniques are taught in this class.

 

The list below includes the minimum fabric requirements.   I highly suggest that you bring a larger selection of fabrics to enable more creative freedom and the ability to develop a larger design. As with all quilting projects, choosing good  quality fabrics will ensure easier sewing and a  more successful finished product.  Choose 100% cottons and prewash them before class.  See you in class!

SPIRAL MIGRATIONS
12-18 Hours - 2-3 Multi-day Class - Intermediate Skill Level

 

Understand the process of creating your own original design star quilt.  All aspects of this type of contemporary

quilt will be covered from stars, to borders to free-form flying geese.  It=s simple and easy with a ruler and a compass, even

for those of you who hate math.  We will begin with an inspirational slide presentation to get your creative juices flowing.  Then,

move on to design and drafting and color theory.  Once you feel comfortable with the drafting, you will continue developing

and stitching your own design.   Day two and three will focus on stitching techniques, and adapting your design to fit the

ever-changing quilt in progress. 

The list below includes the minimum fabric requirements.   I highly suggest that you bring a larger selection of fabrics to enable more creative freedom and the ability to develop a larger design.
